Medical Technologist-Cytometry
Department: Clinical
Location: Richmond, VA

Job Description:

Responsible for processing specimens and performing all testing procedures provided in the clinical flow cytometry section of the laboratory, including reticulocyte counts, immunodeficiency panels, leukemia/lymphoma panels, platelet associated immunoglobulin procedures, and DNA analysis. Processes specimens for referral testing and research protocols. Maintains equipment and records; Performs quality control preventive maintenance duties and participates in quality assurance activities; Participates in the evaluation of new procedures and equipment; Writes and revises technical procedures; Trains others; Assists with miscellaneous functions required to maintain the smooth operation of the department such as clerical duties, reagent preparation, and inventory control activities.

Job Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Knows, understands, and puts into practice general lab policies/procedures as well as department specific policies/procedures. Be aware of the role of the position and its potential impact on patient care, the department, and facility operations.
  • Make decisions and establishes priorities on procedure-oriented operations. Work in an independent manner with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrate initial and annual competency in designated lab sections.
  • Prioritize work to ensure completion within the assigned shift and within expected intervals for turn-around of results.
  • Is cooperative in the performance of leadership job duties and tasks (e.g., supply ordering, restocking, inventory, routine housekeeping, glassware washing).
  • Adjusts work assignments to meet the needs of the section/laboratory, when requested. Helps coworkers with job assignments as time allows.
  • Maintain constructive, open communication with supervisors, co-workers, and customers. Demonstrate an awareness of patient/client expectations and seek to satisfy.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in computer related tasks.
  • Perform and document instrument maintenance. Perform quality control according to established procedures. Perform proficiency testing when applicable. Troubleshoot instruments effectively, when appropriate.
  • Possess an understanding of and participates in annual training to include: laboratory QA/QI, safety plans/policies, HIPAA requirements, blood borne pathogens. Demonstrates the ability to find and implement safety plan/procedure when necessary. Uses PPE and safety devices appropriately.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill necessary to assess data appropriate to the age of the patient being served/cared for, including patient education, when applicable.
  • Understands, supports, enforces and complies with all company policies, processes and procedures, including the Compliance Program and the Code of Conduct.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a science related field from an accredited university
  • Certified as a MT with ASCP qualification preferred.

Experience

  • Three (3) to five (5) years experience in a medical/research laboratory setting.
