Elba A. Turbat-Herrera, M.D.

Dr. Turbat-Herrera joined Bostwick Laboratories in March of 2008. She has 18 years experience in cytopathology. She has lectured in many national and international venues as well as chaired training sessions in cytopathology, ultrastructure and research in her main area of interest: cervical neoplasia and HPV. She has trained 26 fellows in cytopathology and has been cytopathology training program director in three academic institutions. She has also started fine needle aspiration services in three academic medical centers and two veteran administration hospitals. She is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology as well as in cytopathology. She graduated cum laude from the University of Miami, Miami, FL. She received her Doctor of Medicine and completed three years of her residency training at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and one year of residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center. She did her fellowship in cytopathology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, MS. Dr. Turbat-Herrera also completed a research fellowship in biochemistry/virology working on HPV basic research at the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Birmingham, AL.

Dr. Turbat-Herrera’s experience prior to joining Bostwick Laboratories includes serving as a staff pathologist-cytopathology/surgical pathology at the University of Alabama in Birmingham where she held a faculty position. She was also a surgical/cytopathologist as well as professor of pathology at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center at Shreveport, LA and Saint Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Turbat- Herrera was also staff cytopathologist and surgical pathologist at the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center and the Birmingham VA Medical Center where she was also director of electron microscopy. She also served as a consultant at the Willis Knighton Medical Center and the Schumpert Medical Center in Shreveport, LA and Saint Mary’s and Cardinal Glennon’s Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

She is a member of numerous professional societies, including the US and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the American Society of Cytopathology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Turbat-Herrera is part of the editorial Boards of Applied Immunohistochemistry and Molecular Morphology and Ultrastructural Pathology; she is also a reviewer for Acta Cytologica, Diagnostic Cytopathology and Human Pathology, among others.
