Renal cells appear in urine in increased numbers in a variety of disease states. There are three types of renal tubular cells. This photo illustrates proximal and distal renal tubular cells. These cells have a characteristic oval to oblong shape and single eccentric nucleus. The cytoplasm is granular. Papanicolaou stain. 600x magnification.

These renal tubular cells originate from the distal collecting ducts of the kidney. They are smaller, have a centrally placed nucleus and have granular cytoplasm. Proximal and distal collecting duct cells are found in increased numbers in acute tubular necrosis. (ATN). Papanicolaou stain. 1000X magnification.

Renal cells from the collecting ducts are often found in conjunction with casts of various types. These figures illustrate collecting duct cells. Note the cuboidal shape of the cells and the small, centrally placed nucleus. Papanicolaou Stain, 600X magnification.
