Renal fragments are composed of renal tubular cells which have been shed from the collecting ducts of the kidney as intact units. They are joined together and have characteristic formations. Renal fragments represent as pathologic process known as “ischemic necrosis” which is a loss of blood flow to various portions of the collecting ducts. There are five characteristic presentations of renal fragments; Epithelium (Figure 5B) attached to or moulded by casts (Figure 5A), epithelial encasement by a cast, cylindrical (sleeve-like) epithelium (Figure 5C), enface or honeycomb arrangement (Figure 5D), spindle or elongated cells (Figure 5E).
