Dysmorphic red cells appear variable in size (anisocytosis), shape (poikilocytosis) and in staining characteristics. They are often seen in the presence of renal casts and urine protein. Target cells are shown in Figures 2A and 2C and appear similar to “bull’s eyes”. Dysmorphic red cells may also have cytoplasmic projections or blebs around the periphery of the cell as shown in Figure 2B. Papanicolaou stain 1000x magnification.
