- Cowper's Glands, (low magnification) fig.1 - They are small, paired bulbomembranous urethral glands which may be mistaken for prostatic adenocarcinoma in small biopsy specimens. Note the circumscribed, lobulated aggregate of benign-appearing uniform acini with abundant mucinous cytoplasm and small, basally-located hyperchromatic nuclei.
- Cowper's Glands, (high magnification) fig.2 - The distinction of Cowper's glands from adenocarcinoma of prostate is based on several features. Cowper's glands have central ducts lined by cuboidal epithelium (several seen in this photomicrograph) that create a bimorphic appearance lacking in adenocarcinoma. Cowper's glands also lack cytologic atypia and are often situated within skeletal muscle.
