Second Opinions
We are pleased to provide second opinions on cases involving the prostate, bladder, kidney or other organs. This service continues the long and proud tradition of Dr. Bostwick's personal consultation practice in urologic pathology which he began at the Mayo Clinic.
How To Send Slides The laboratory where the biopsies were processed can send the slides and paperwork directly to us in plastic slide mailers. For prostate biopsies, recent serum PSA values are helpful, but not mandatory, in proper interpretation. Multiple sets of biopsy slides on one patient are billed as a single case.
If you are a patient requesting a second opinion, the pathology laboratory that originally processed your specimen may require you to sign an authorization before they release the slides to us.
If you are requesting DNA Ploidy Analysis, please have the referring laboratory send us the paraffin block with the greatest volume of cancer.
Results The slides are read the same day they are received. Results are available by fax usually within 24 hours of receiving the slides, with rare exceptions. Occasional cases may require immunostains or other special stains delaying the result. Cases with cancer or any other features of clinical significance contain a color photomicrograph on the report.
